As well a being full of excitement, show jumping has an interesting history which still continues to evolve in modern times.  Although the principles of horse-riding were described as far back as 350 BC by the ancient Greek writer Xenophon in his treatise On Horses, then detailed in increasing depth during the course of the centuries, few writings on jumping fences or other obstacles with horses are found before the end of the 19th century. Indeed, before the codifying of hunting with hounds, by the English Enclosure Acts in the 18th century, which made the hunters follow the traces of the pack and therefore required them to jump over obstacles on the way, there were hardly any reasons to jump obstacles in the countryside.

But towards the end of the 19th century, hunting with hounds across enclosed fields became very common, both in Great Britain and on the continent. Obstacle races and horse shows became more and more popular. The first competition with jump obstacles took place in Ireland in 1865. In France, it is was not until 1870 that the first tests of horses over obstacle jumps took place. The first courses were made up of bars as well as water and ground obstacles, all to be traversed in the least time possible. Show jumping for single riders appeared in the Olympics for the first time in the 1900 Paris games. Teams had their first Olympic opportunity in the 1920 games in Antwerp.

In spite of this rather recent advent, show jumping and similar sports have already evolved considerably. Until the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, a team consisted of only three riders. If one was ruled out, all of the team was out of the running. Therefore there were no team medals in Los Angeles in 1932, as no complete team came through. Since the Munich Olympics in 1972 a team consists of four riders.

Since 1997 a new sport developed in Switzerland called Offroad-Kjöring teams up horse, rider and an inline skater! The skater, with special offroad rollerblades designed to travel on grass, is pulled along by the horse and rider. The course consists of different types of obstacles, often very similar to a traditional showjumping arena. There are steep and high jumps for both the horse and skater. At the side of the jumps are ramps for the skater. Some of the obstacles are jumped by both the horse and skater, some by only the horse and some by only the skater. Slalom obstacles are also included just for the skater.
