Have some creative fun piecing together this online jigsaw puzzle of a traditional beer cart pulled by a team of beautifully dressed horses at Munich's Oktoberfest in Germany.

The first Oktoberfest in Munich took place in 1810 with a horse race and an associated festival to celebrate the wedding of  prince Ludwig and princess Therese.  Although the modern Oktoberfest no longer includes horse racing, our equine friends still play a large part in the parades through the city center.

A national costume parade took place in 1835 for the first time to honour of the silver wedding of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese. In 1895 the author Maximilian Schmidt organised another parade with 1400 participants in 150 different national costumes. Since 1950 this parade has continued to be held each year. It is one of the climaxes of the Oktoberfest, and one of the largest parades of its kind in the world. Today, on the first Sunday of the festival, 8,000 participants parade in their traditional national costumes from a palatial building called the Maximilianeum , home of the Bavarian state parliament, over the seven-kilometre-long distance up to the festival grounds.

The parade is attended by the Munich kindl, a young woman usually between the age of 20 and 26 who represents the figure shown on the Munich coat of Arms. The kindl dressed in a monk's outfit rides a horse along the parade. Following her, are notable members of the town council, city administrators, ministers of the free state of Bavaria and usually the Prime Minister and his wife. The procession includes musical bands, minstrels, colourful flag wavers and about 40 beautifully decorated horse and cart teams like the one shown in this jigsaw puzzle. The associations and groups come mainly from Bavaria, but also from other German federal states, Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy and other European countries.

At the Oktoberfest party the 6 Munich breweries of Hofbräu, Löwenbräu , Paulaner, Spatenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr, and Augustinians, are represented with festival tents. According to the rules of the festival, only Munich beers from the traditional Munich breweries which correspond to the Munich purity requirement of 1487 and the German purity requirement of 1906 may be served to visitors. Fourteen large and fifteen smaller beer tents are set up for visitors to choose from.

Oktoberfest Beer Mugs

Today the beer mugs used in the festival tents are no longer made of the traditional clay, but of glass instead in an attempt to reduce beer mug theft. They remain the property of the respective breweries and are not to be kept by the visitors. Particularly in the 1980s and 1990s the beer mug thefts got out of control and the security staff in the festival tents were instructed to keep a lookout for thieves. The festival's landlord's union has for many years held police charges against beer mug thieves. The beer mugs which are officially bought as a souvenirs are marked with a coloured badge to differentiate them from the mugs used to serve drinks at the festival itself.

The Oktoberfest Hit

For some years the song which is played and sung along with in the beer tents most often is celebrated by the newspapers and media as the Oktoberfest hit. Because the lyrics are not always familiar to many festival goers, there is a song primer with the words to the most popular songs.
