The United Nations have declared Assateague Island as a World biosphere reserve. The ministry of the Interior of the United States has classed the whole island as a National Natural Landmark.

Three agencies take care of the preservation of the environment on this island. Since 1943, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Shelter, in Virginia, deals with the safeguarding of the natural habitat of the animals, especially of that of the snow goose. Also in Virginia, the Assateague Island National Seashore was founded in 1965 to preserve the island and to organise leisure activities. Finally, in the Maryland, the Assateague State Park works toward the same ends.

The island is known for its pure clean sandy beaches, natural environment and herds of wild horses like those shown in our jigsaw puzzle. Marshland, coves and bays complete the setting.

The wild horses are known as Assateague horses or Chincoteague ponies. They come in all different shades, although many are pinto colored, having a pattern of white and a darker coloring. Although they only stand at around 122 centimeters high, their body shape is that of a small horse rather than a pony.
