Have fun solving this scenic jigsaw puzzle of Keukenhof Castle. Located just outside the world-famous Keukenhof Flower Gardens in Holland, Keukenhof castle was built in 1642 as country house by Adriaen Maertensz. Block, a former commander of the Dutch East India Company and governor of Ambon Island of the Maluku Islands in Indonesia. It is not clear if he actually lived in the castle. Later, among several other owners others were the anatomist, profesor Willem Röell, and the art expert Johan Steengracht van Oostcapelle. The last owner, Jan Carel Elias earl of Lynden (1912-2003), grandson of the baronesse of Pallandt, left the castle and its land after his death to the Keukenhof foundation. The foundation has given itself the task of bringing the castle and its estate back to the good state that they were in around the start of the 20th century. The entire estate consists of more than 230 acres of land, upon which 18 national monuments stand. At the end of 2012, Keukenhof Castle was reopened after almost two years of restoration. Guided tours are available and different rooms can be leased for dinners, receptions or meetings. In the gardens several art exhibitions and public events take place. The castle has an important collection of furniture and portraits, including those of the Dutch Painter Nicolaes Maes. Chinese and Japanese porcelain can be found in an unique and specially built cabinet. Not only has the castle been entirely restored, but also the coach house which dates back to 1857. During the restoration many unique elements have been kept, for example the original English horse stables. The coach house is used nowadays for concerts, dinners, meetings, special evenings and receptions among other things. The castle and its scenic grounds have been regularly used for films and television, including the Dutch drama serials “Queen Juliana” about the Dutch queen who reigned from 1948 to 1980, and “Bernhard rascal of orange”, about Queen Juliana's prince consort. Each year, many different public events take place on the grounds, such as the Christmas fair "Christmas at Keukenhof Castle" which includes carols, skating, food and drink stalls, tours and entertainment. Another popular event, which is depicted in our scenic jigsaw puzzle of the castle, is known as Castlefest. This is the largest medieval and fantasy based event in Holland. It includes battle re-enactments, live action roleplay (also known as LARP for short), live music and artistry amongst fun activities.
