Yahtzee is an excellent fun game for all the family. In fact I remember many Sunday afternoons playing Yahtzee with my mother and father when I was younger. That was in the late 1970's and early 1980's before the time of home computers, so real dice and a plastic shaker was used. Now though, you can play Yahtzee here online at Springfrog from the convenience of your computer. It is a game that involves luck, plus skill and strategy too. The luck is in the roll of the dice themselves, but you need to use strategy to and a bit of skill to decide which dice to keep during the 3 rolls available to you, and where on the scoring board to choose to place your score to ensure that your overall total at the end of the game is as high as possible.
Yahtzee RulesYahtzee uses 5 standard dice. You have a total of up to three throws in each turn. After each throw within a turn, you can decide whether to hold any of your dice, in order to try to make as good a final combination as possible. At the end of each turn you must select somewhere on the scoreboard (shown below the dice) to place your score. To start a turn, click the Roll button for your first roll of all 5 dice. If you are lucky and have an excellent initial roll, you may want to stick with all of the dice you have, and choose somewhere in the scoreboard to place your score immediately. It is more likely however that you'll need a second and probably a third roll to perfect your combination of dice as much as possible. Therefore, for each of the dice which you want to keep (ie not re-throw), click the "Hold" tick-box below the dice to hold any that you wish to keep.. Then click the Roll button for your second throw of the unheld dice (the Roll button will keep track of how many rolls you've already had in each turn). At the end of the second throw you can again choose which dice to hold before your third and final throw. Bear in mind that the dice you hold this time around do not have to include the ones you held between your first and second throw. To "unhold" a dice, simply click the "Hold" tick-box where an existing tick is to remove the tick.At the end of each turn (or when you are happy with your combination of dice if you choose to place your score before the third throw), you will need to choose where in the scoring area to choose by clicking one of the empty tick-boxes . Each type of combination ("Full House", "Large Straight" etc) should be only used once so after you've chosen where to place your score for a particular turn, a tick will show in the box beside the score combination to indicate that you should not use this combination again during the game.Scoring in Yahtzee Some of the scoring combinations in Yahtzee are similar to Poker, with relative values being reflected in the scores. Some combinations are however different, so you'll need to bear the scoring values in mind when deciding which column to use for scoring after each turn. With ones, just add up the total number of dice with a 1 value, to get your total score. For example if your final dice show 2-1-5-1-1, you score three points. Two, threes, fours, fives and sixes all work on the same principal as ones. For example with fours, if your final dice show 4-6-4-4-4 you would score 16 points in the fours column. 3 of a Kind is three dice, each of the same value and two other dice of any other value. With three of a kind you need to add up the total of all the dice to get your score. 4 of a Kind is four dice, each of the same value and one other dice of any different value. With four of a kind you need to add up the total of all the dice to get your score. A Full House is a combination of three dice, each of the same particular value and two dice, each of the same value (but different to the other three dice) value. A full house always scores 25 points.A Small Straight is four dice of consecutive values. In other words, 1-2-3-4 or 2-3-4-5 or 3-4-5-6. A small straight scores 30 points regardless of the values of the dice.A Large Straight is five dice of consecutive values. In other words, 1-2-3-4-5 or 2-3-4-56. A large straight will score you 40 points.Yahtzee is the big one! When playing the game with a real shaker and dice, it's tradition when you get this to shout out YAHTZEE!
